Carlson willing to sit down with NCAA

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A North Dakota State lawmaker says he's willing to sit down with the NCAA and Big Sky to talk about the Fighting Sioux Nickname and logo. Maybe even sway them.

Al Carlson sponsored the bill that requires U-N-D to keep its nickname and logo. Carlson says members of the legislature voted for the people, not themselves. Carlson says he would still sponsor and vote yes on the bill - even if he'd known it would risk UND's membership into the Big Sky Conference. Carlson feels last week's letter to UND from Big Sky was driven by the NCAA.

Al Carlson – (R) ND Majority Leader: “We passed it, the governor signed it, we did not see it as derogatory we saw that Standing Rock gave us the name in 69 and that Spirit Lake voted 70-30 to keep the name. We think that the process was completed, we know we're dealing with an agreement they signed but we believe that the people of North Dakota, at least the majority of them would like to see the name kept.”

The vice president of the state board of higher education says lawmakers should be considering the ramifications it'll have on student-athletes at UND.
