Firefighter competition featured at Summerfest in Fergus FallsFergus Falls, Minn. (WDAY TV) - It's that time of year again. Time for fried pickles, funnel cakes, and fairs. Fergus Falls is hosting its annual Summerfest, but this one is unlike any the community has had in a long time.
Fergus Falls has been hosting summer festivals for dozens of years, but despite sunny skies and gorgeous temperatures, this year's events was a little wetter than normal. For the first time since 1986, SummerFest featured the firefighters water ball competition.
Luke Draxton – Fergus Falls Firefighter: “We found some of the old equipment that was hiding out in the barn. Got a new ball and had some area participation which hasn't happened for a while.”
The competition featured six teams from four different departments, including Fergus Falls, Underwood, Dalton and Sheridan.
Draxton: “You know we help each other out in serious situations when people need help with fires and any situation like that. But to have a chance to come out here and goof around and add in some competition is really fun.”
From water fights to bounce houses, to all the fried food you can imagine, this year's Summerfest had a little something for everyone.
Jaxen Swedenburg: “The crafts and everything else too.”
Kyra Swedenburg: “I like the bouncy things.”
Vanessa Swedenburg – Took Kids to Festival: “We love eating the food, that's one of the highlights of the summer is everyone's got something special that they look forward to every year.”
With the number of vendors increasing along with the number of people, officials expect to keep this year's momentum rolling on into 2012. Nearly 10 thousand people attended today's events.
