JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) — Jamestown College pitcher Alex Kreis is beginning his professional career in New York.

The Washington Nationals selected Kreis in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball draft last week. The Jamestown Sun newspaper reports that the Nationals are sending the Grand Forks native to play with the Auburn Doubledays, the Nationals' short-season Class A minor league team in the New York-Penn League.

The short-season leagues generally are for college players like Kreis who already have put in full seasons. The Doubledays begin playing games on Friday and continue through the first week of September.

Kreis had a 21-5 record and an ERA of 3.49 in 30 starts for the Jimmies. He struck out 217 batters in 209 innings.
