Soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice are remembered

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Memorial Day: The time to remember serving soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice. In an outdoor ceremonial salute on the Veterans Memorial Bridge, veterans and visitors came to honor those fallen.

Flags are being passed, sharing the spirit of this Memorial Day to those stopping on the Veterans Memorial Bridge.

"Thank you for being here as we honor fallen heroes."

The weather is somber, reflecting the mood of those gathered here to remember the true meaning of the holiday.

"When the need was greatest they stepped forward."

Robert Jacobson – Navy Veteran: "Its a day of remembering, recognizing those who've passed away, lost their lives while serving."

Flag after flag line area graves, a reminder to the community that freedom isn't free.

Jim Haukedahl – ND Commander of Disabled Veterans: "When you're out at the cemeteries and you can see all the flags out there, you can really visualize the number of veterans who've passed away."

The number is growing and Veterans like Jim Haukedahl know those fallen heroes paid the ultimate sacrifice.

"There's many who've paid dearly."

Jim Haukedahl:"Never forget, because for them, its given us all the freedom we have and be able to do all these things we can in this great country of ours."

The day brings Veterans closer, even if the reason is to remember lives lost in waging wars.

Robert Jacobson: "They probably don't see each other real often but its one of those days they do get together."
