Red River Basin Commission members tour permanent flood protection

Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - We've come a long way since the flood of 2009 in the fight to hold back water, but besides a diversion can we do more?

Members of the Red River Basin Commission toured Moorhead's permanent flood protection. Moorhead, county and region-wide leaders also took part. Commission members say it helps people understand flooding is wider problem than the Red River.

How can we work together with people outside our area during a flood? City and county officials are working on better flood response plans.

This is one of two workshops a year in the Midwest which usually focuses on severe weather response. This meeting highlighted flood disasters. County and city officials in our area brain stormed ways to manage flood situations like using one common alert or evacuation system. Our Meteorologist John Wheeler also participated in the discussions.
