Less than ideal weather as a million anglers look for the big one

Henning, Minn. (WDAY Sports) - To absolutely no one's surprise, today's Minnesota Fishing Opener featured less than ideal weather. And yet, nearly a million anglers descended on Minnesota lakes once again throughout the state.

It's become tradition on the walleye opener to have cold, wind, and rain. We had all of those at Clitherall Lake, looking for the big one.

I joined up with the Shaw family, which has fished on this lake for over 20 years. Jake Shaw took us out along with his nephews, Avery and Tanner. We trolled to a few different spots, not getting much deeper than 15 feet.

Jake Shaw - Henning, MN: “Typically, first day we do a lot of moving around until we find something. Once one boat finds something we kind of congregate. So it's kind of a scouting process at the moment.”

We were out for about 20 minutes, when one member of the Shaw family caught the first walleye of the day! Unfortunately, our luck ended there. We were out for over an hour, and all we came up with was one fish. After getting back to shore, I did find someone who had better luck than I.

Jim Kreykes - Caught 8-pound walleye Off Dock: “I was fishing for crappies off the dock with a little gulp bait minnow, jig head and bobber and caught him, an 8 pounder, on my second cast.”

The one thing everything can agree on today was a tough day to be out on the water.
