FARGO, N.D. (AP) — U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates told college graduates that they must show leadership at a time when rising world powers are being more assertive.

Gates spoke to about 8,400 graduates and guests Saturday at North Dakota State University's commencement ceremony.

Gates said the "most able and idealistic" people must step forward and accept the burden of public service. He noted his own record of serving eight presidents while working for the CIA and the National Security Council.

Graduate Kara Lewis, who received her doctor of nursing practice degree, told The Forum newspaper that she was honored to hear Gates speak in the wake of Osama bin Laden's capture.
