Curves Collecting Gently Used Purses For A Good Cause

Grand Forks, ND (WDAZ TV) - A Grand Forks teenager is using her personal struggles to inspire people in the community to help those suffering from cancer. How? She's helping collect everyday purses to put a personal touch on cancer.

19-year-old Lacey Reike has seen family members and friends struggle with cancer.

"My grandpa's had cancer twice, but we know a couple women here who, they were members, got cancer, had to quit and then came back as soon as they recovered." Reike said.

Reike works at Curves in Grand Forks, helping women stay healthy. A new fundraiser, collecting used purses is helping people she knows.

"One, they get rid of their purses, and two we raise money for the community and it's nice to support." reike said.

Donations started this week at Curves with each purse being sold for 5-dollars and each belt and wallet for 1-dollar. all proceeds benefiting Relay For Life.

"You don't have to be a member. Anyone in the community can bring purses in. Anybody in the community can come and buy purses." Curves owner Audrey Knutson said.

This is the second year of the event. Last year 95 purses were sold raising over 3-hundred dollars for the American Cancer Society. People like Reike are just happy to be able to help make a difference in peoples lives.

"It's just a good thing to do, you know, you feel better and you know your helping someone, you're helping a good cause so it's nice." Reike said.

"That's what Curves is all about is strengthening women and so anytime there is an event, whether it's connected with diabetes or cancer or whatever. We definitely like to be a part of it." Knutson said.

If you would like to donate or buy a purse, you can stop in at either of the Curves locations in Grand Forks. 2100 S. Columbia Rd or 2550 S Columbia Rd # F. Donations will be accepted throughout the month of May.
