Shanley 6, Fargo North 3

Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - There are certain occasions where the actual games we cover are secondary to something else. That was the case in south Fargo as Joel Swanson and his Shanley baseball team hosted North. More on Joel in a second.

In the 3rd inning, Shanley's Jon Nygaard with the sac fly to left field. It scores Alex Widmer and the Deacons are up 6-1.

In the 5th inning, North gets a little rally, Nate Walsh hammers a double to the fence, bringing in Tyler Carroll; Spartans down by just 6-2.

Same score, next inning, men on 2nd and 3rd for Walsh. A base hit here makes things real interesting, but Shanley's Trey Larson makes the fantastic diving catch to end the inning.

In between the games tonight, there was a big surprise. Swanson had his girlfriend Lisa believe that she was taking some team photos. But the players were in on the plan, each helping out with a letter for a marriage proposal from Joel. When she finally realized what was happening, the coach was there on his knee with the ring. She said yes.

It was a plan that came together beautifully from start to finish.

Joel Swanson - Shanley Head Coach: “I tried to find a way to surprise her with out making it work. I had a lot of people helping to make it work, keeping her occupied today and practiced with the players. We had a run through with the letters yesterday at practice, but it all came together exactly the way we wanted it.”
