Minnewaukan facing more floodwater problems

MINNEWAUKAN, N.D. (AP) — Devils Lake floodwaters are causing fresh headaches for the town of Minnewaukan.

MINNEWAUKAN, N.D. (AP) — Devils Lake floodwaters are causing fresh headaches for the town of Minnewaukan.

Residents were urged Wednesday to move belongings from basements after the city's sewer system became inundated. City officials told KZZY radio early Thursday that the sewer system was back to functioning normally.

The Grand Forks Herald reports that officials are working on plans for a temporary berm to keep the encroaching lake away from the school, the city water tower and several blocks of private property.

The Benson County town of 300 people has been battling the flooding lake for 15 years. Some buildings have been moved, along with a highway on the city's east edge. Officials have contemplated moving the entire town.

Devils Lake has quadrupled in size since 1993 because of a series of wet years.
