Homicide investigation underway after a man was found dead near Spiritwood

Spiritwood, ND (WDAY TV) - A homicide investigation is underway in Stutsman County after a man was found dead near Spiritwood Saturday afternoon. Two suspects are in custody and authorities are still trying to determine the victim's identity.

"It is a little eerie."

Less than a mile down the road on highway 62 Dwight Kendall's home sits from where authorities discovered a body.

DWIGHT KENDALL - Lives near Where Body Was Found: "I was surprised; I didn't know what to think."

The body was discovered in this ditch on the north side of I-94 just after 12 yesterday afternoon by someone driving by.

CHAD KAISER - Stutsman County Sheriff: "I've been here 14-years. It’s been a while before that. I don't know the exact date of when we actually had a homicide in the county."

After investigating, 7-hours after the discovery, a man and woman were arrested in Jamestown in connection with the homicide. Police won’t say if the two are related, or even release the names because no formal charges have been filed. Only one of the suspects has a non-violent criminal record.

Chad Kaiser: "The states attorney has been working on this all night and all day today. The rest of the autopsy hopefully will be performed more than likely tomorrow."

The victim is still unknown to investigators, but is described as a young, tall and thin black male. No people have even bee reported missing in the area matching that description. Kaiser also would not elaborate on what led them to believe it was a homicide.

As for Dwight Kendall, the eerie feeling still is sitting with him anxious to know what exactly happened so close to his quiet home.

Dwight Kendall: "We are just waiting; we are waiting because we don’t know anymore than probably you do."

The suspects may be charged in court today. Anyone with possible information about the victim is asked to call Stutsman County authorities.
