VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple says it appears that Valley City is prepared to handle flooding and releases into the Sheyenne River from a nearby dam.
Dalrymple met with city and county officials Thursday in Valley City, where levees have been quickly raised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and some residents. The projected crest on the river unexpectedly rose in the last two days from 18.5 feet to 20.5 feet.
Dalrymple says there was a surge in the release of water Wednesday from Baldhill Dam, but that has "settled down." He says the water will remain high for a long time and it's important to monitor the dikes.
The North Dakota National Guard is on hand to help with any possible leaks in the levees.
