Rivers leveling off near Hendrum and Halstad

Halstad, Minn. (WDAY TV) - In Halstad tonight, the river appears to have leveled off near 40.6 feet. The water is right up against the dike in Halstad, but there is a good 4 to five feet of freeboard around the city.

The one exception is the Northeast corner of town near the elevator where there were a few tense moments last night as water started to seep in. Part of a train had to be moved to stop get in and stop the leak.

The Wild Rice has also leveled off in Hendrum tonight as well. This is the scene on County Road 25 just west of town where the Wild Rice has turned into raging rapids cutting off the bridge to North Dakota.

In town the water is up against the temporary dike that we showed you hastily being built last night.

MAYOR CURT JOHANSEN - Hendrum, MN: “And now it’s just monitoring things but we have a good, a good 2 to 3 feet if not more of freeboard the only thing that could cause us problems is if lets say a culvert started leaking or something like that.”

This summer Hendrum will be getting a new, higher, permanent levee.
