Fate of ND sheriff being settled in recall vote

GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) — Residents of Walsh County in northeast North Dakota were going to the polls Tuesday to decide whether to recall Sheriff Lauren Wild.

The effort to oust the sheriff began when he fired longtime deputy Ron Nord the day after the Nov. 2 election. Nord unsuccessfully challenged Wild in the election, and Wild said Nord spread lies about him during the campaign. Nord disputes that.

A citizen group early this year turned in recall petitions with enough signatures to force the recall vote. The Grand Forks Herald reports that the ballot has three names — Wild, Nord and former Chief Deputy Bob Thomas, who retired two years ago.
