Rising water a familiar sight in Oslo

Oslo, Minn. (WDAY TV) - A man near Oslo is spending his Sunday out in the rain, checking sump pumps and watching as waters surround his home.

LLOYD SCHMIDT - House Surrounded by Water: “The worst part is not knowing, nobody can predict it.”

Living near Oslo for 15 years, rising water is a familiar sight each spring.

Lloyd: “We got 7 sump pumps, 3 for the basement, 2 out back and one out here.”

As you can see behind me, Schmidts driveway is already flooding over with water and in the next couple of days he expects it may be a little harder to get out.

Lloyd: “Well there's really nothing we can do because we got some water on the dry side of the dike too.”

Schmidt isn't the only one keeping a close eye on the Red. With a crest of 38 feet expected this week some people aren't taking any chances.

SCOTT KOSMATKA - Oslo Mayor: “Their concerned about getting out so some of them have actually moved out already.”

This will be the third year the town may be surrounded by water. Although people in town are protected by an earthen levee up to 42 feet, those like Schmidt living just outside are doing what they can and hoping for the best.

Lloyd: “Two years ago it was about this deep and then last year it just barely came up. It's not coming in this year as it has other years.”

The National Weather Service predicts a crest of 38 feet in Oslo Thursday.
