City officials encourage homeowners to remain vigilant

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The flood preps are done in Fargo, now comes watching and waiting. More on what homeowners can do to keep their whole neighborhood safe.

The dike building in Fargo is complete, but the sandbag deployment continues as each neighborhood is stocked with a backup supply in case there are any breaches or need to add on to the dikes.

Having the sandbags ready to go could save the city a lot of time if there is an emergency this weekend. Leaders are relying on Code Red to let neighbors know when their help may be needed to do additional sandbagging.

Hundreds of thousands of these bags were delivered just today... And will stay in these neighborhoods until the threat is gone. Until then, city officials continue to encourage vigilance.

DR. TIM MAHONEY - Fargo Deputy Mayor: “If water gets on the dike and you get a leak, it can go pretty fast with the velocity we have of the river right now. So we really want people to be out there and be watching. So we'll probably continue to use that term of constant vigilance is what we want in the next 3 days."

Officials are asking homeowners to check on their sandbag dikes every hour, day and night, once water hits the bags until it recedes once again. Homeowners can call in any breaches or leaks to 476-4199.

eran of several flood fights, says he doesn't think the Red will break 39 feet.
