ND Senate tables abortion restrictions

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota senators used a procedural maneuver Thursday to defeat a bill that sought to ban most abortions in the state.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota senators used a procedural maneuver Thursday to defeat a bill that sought to ban most abortions in the state.

The measure sought to give human rights to a fertilized egg and said anyone who damaged or killed a fertilized egg could be prosecuted for murder or assault. The bill included exemptions for some fertility procedures and medical treatment.

North Dakota senators voted Thursday to table the bill. It will need support from two-thirds of the Senate to bring the measure back for another vote.

Before the bill was tabled, senators argued about whether it should contain an exemption when a woman is a victim of rape or incest.

Bismarck Sen. Margaret Sitte (SIT'-ee) opposed the exemption. She said, "Life has value, no matter how it begins."
