Laney: Fewer federal agencies will assist with flood fight

(WDAY TV) - With no emergency declaration signed for our region, and with a threat looming of a government shutdown, fewer federal agencies will assist us in the flood fight.

Because President Obama has not signed the emergency declaration for flooding here in the valley, no federal agencies like U-S Fish and Wildlife or the Border Patrol have been assigned to assist local agencies.

The Coast Guard will, since it operates under different guidelines. Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney says his deputies will be stretched thin because of fewer bodies available.

PAUL LANEY - Cass County Sheriff: “Without that emergency declaration, we cannot call on those assets and then on top of that we have the pending shutdown which is a lot of personnel and we also have us fish and major partners in this the whole time.”

Because of fewer federal agencies helping, the number of airboats available will be cut in half.
