Officials: Oakport is more prepared than ever to fight the spring floodOakport Township, Minn. (WDAY TV) - The Township of Oakport has been devastated by floods in the past, but things are looking quite different this year.
Despite tonight’s weather expectations, the Township of Oakport isn't worried. Officials say they'll be more prepared than ever to fight the spring flood. The Army Corp approved construction of this clay dike in Brentwood Acres late last week.
The dike will be 16-feet high in order to reach Oakport's 44-foot protection level. The Township already has close to 70-percent of its permanent dikes in place and only a few more temporary dikes left to build.
GREG ANDERSON - Chair, Oakport Town Board: “We're working with the Corp, they'll start work on those areas well in advance of the crest coming in. So we should have everything locked down to 44 feet well in advance of any problems.”
Anderson says the dike being built this week is a temporary one; however a permanent fixture will be in place this summer. Officials hope to have the dike finished by this weekend.
