VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) — Emergency repairs are slated to begin this week at a damaged dam in southeast North Dakota.

KOVC radio reports that Excavating Inc. of Fargo was awarded a contract last week to shore up the dam's emergency spillway.

The first phase of a $1.8 million renovation of the Clausen Springs Dam, six miles uphill from Kathryn, was supposed to be completed months ago to protect the town. But officials say a Minnesota company hired to do the work has done nothing since December.

The 55 residents of Kathryn fled their homes in April 2009 after flooding began to erode the dam's spillway. The town dodged disaster last year after another wet spring.
