North Dakotans still in Iditarod race

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota musher is holding on to 30th place in the 39th Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota musher is holding on to 30th place in the 39th Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Kelly Maixner, formerly of Beach, was listed with 12 dogs remaining in his team. He reached the Koyuk checkpoint, 123 miles from the finish line in Nome, Alaska.

Bismarck native Heather Siirtola left the Kaltag checkpoint early Wednesday morning Alaska time, 269 miles from the finish line with 10 dogs remaining in her team. She's listed in 47th place.

The other North Dakota musher, Ellen Halvorson, is in 48th place, less than one hour behind. She has 12 dogs left in her team.

Sixteen teams had finished the 1,131-mile race by Wednesday morning. Fourteen of the original 62 teams have dropped out of the race.
