ND tops in honey production for 7th straight year

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota leads the nation in the production of honey for the seventh straight year.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota leads the nation in the production of honey for the seventh straight year.

The Agriculture Department says production in the state last year totaled 46.4 million pounds, up 34 percent from 2009.

There were 510,000 producing colonies in North Dakota during 2010, up 13 percent to a record high. Yield per colony increased from 77 pounds to 91 pounds.

Prices for the 2010 honey crop also were at a record level, with an average of 151 cents per pound.

California ranked second in production last year at 27.5 million pounds. South Dakota was third at 15.6 million pounds.
