New Town beats Fargo Oak Grove 66-64

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — New Town withstood a frantic Fargo Oak Grove rally to beat the Grovers 66-64 Thursday in their first appearance at the North Dakota boys Class B basketball tournament in 30 years.

New Town's last appearance at the state tournament was 1981. It won the title in 1980.

The Eagles (24-1) led 53-35 with just over six minutes to play. But the Grovers (25-1) roared back to cut the deficit to two before running out of time. It's the second straight year that Oak Grove's first loss came in the first round of the state tourney.

Preston Smith had 13 points, 22 rebounds and 5 assists for New Town. Mike Young Bird had 18 points and Donovan Lambert added 16.

Evan Holt had 26 points and Shayden Akason 19 for Oak Grove, which took 82 shots to just 35 by the Eagles. The Grovers shot just 27 percent. New Town drained 57 percent.
