Forman, ND (WDAY TV) - A Forman, North Dakota man is hospitalized after leading police on a 26-mile long chase and then shooting himself in the stomach.

Sargent County Sheriff Travis Paeper says deputies started looking for the 61-year-old man at about 5:15 yesterday. Family members were concerned that he had left home at 7 am and still hadn't returned.

At 6:45, a deputy found the man about 4 miles north of Rutland and tried to stop him. The man got out of the vehicle with a gun, apparently firing it before getting back in and leading a 26-mile long chase with top speeds of 40 miles an hour.

The chase ended due to a snow-packed road near Gwinner where the man got out of the vehicle and shot himself in the abdomen. He was airlifted to Sanford in Fargo. His name is not being released.
