FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A man who walked away from a Devils Lake halfway house on a work release program is facing a federal charge.
A criminal complaint accuses John Short Jr. of escape from federal custody. Authorities say Short failed to return from his job at a Cando pig farm on Jan. 27. He was arrested in Belcourt on Jan. 28.
Short says in court documents he left because of a medical problem. The government says Short attempted to avoid arrest and should have notified the halfway house if he had a medical issue.
Short had been sentenced in December 2008 to nearly 3 ½ years in prison on a burglary charge.
