Major Curling Championship to be decided in Fargo

Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - It's not often that the F-M area hosts a national championship, but beginning Saturday, the Scheels Arena will host the USA Curling Nationals. WDAY 6 Sports Director Dom Izzo took to the ice to learn more about a sport that dates back to the 16th century.

It's one of the most unique sports in the world, and for the 2nd time in three years a major championship will be decided in North Dakota, its curling. Today we take a look at the ins and outs of this great sport.

“It looks a lot easier than it is as you'll find out later, you need the finesse, place to stop the rock in the house as well strategy of chess, angles of pool, and shuffleboard as people refer to as.”

We'll start you off before throwing a rock; get a feel of sliding out of the hack. You have two sweepers. Their job is to judge the weight of the rock, meaning how fast it's moving and get it to the other end of the sheet. I have my skip holding a broom for me to aim at it.

When's the earliest they can start sweeping? As soon as the rock is let go. Well Dom, you didn't get to the button, but you might make a good lead guard.

I'll be the one to set everything up then.

The US Nationals get underway Saturday at Scheels Arena.
