Highway Patrol: Vehicle-snow plow collisions are avoidable

(WDAY TV) – There is some startling numbers from Minnesota roads this winter. There have been 76 accidents involving Minn-Dot snow plows. But it's how the accidents are happening that has state troopers scratching their heads.

Highway patrol troopers say nearly every one of these vehicle, snow plow collisions are avoidable. They say it's a simple fix, it happens from drivers clearly over driving road conditions.

Sgt. Grabow says the plows are being run into, usually from vehicles trying to pass a plow, and it's a problem every winter. 2 years ago there were 103 of these crashes. Last year 84, and so far this year, 76, with plenty of winter left.

"It just comes down to enough people are not paying attention are not giving the respect the care required when coming around these snow plows. It's a very large vehicle and it's nothing to take too lightly."

A reminder the plows do make frequent stops and turns off of interstate. Grabow says drivers need to stay patient and that's a perfect time to then pass. Drivers running into snowplows are often charged with failed to use due care. That's a 125 dollar ticket.
