Berg: State of Union didn't lift uncertainty

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Republican U.S. Rep. Rick Berg says President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech didn't lift the "cloud of uncertainty" that is delaying economic recovery.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Republican U.S. Rep. Rick Berg says President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech didn't lift the "cloud of uncertainty" that is delaying economic recovery.

Obama mentioned getting rid of tax loopholes and lowering the overall federal corporate income tax rate. But Berg says the president also talked about raising taxes on high earners, and Berg says that will discourage job growth.

Berg says he didn't hear much from Obama about reining in federal regulatory power. And he says Obama's proposal to freeze federal discretionary spending for five years isn't enough when the annual deficit is above $1 trillion.

Berg is beginning his first term, and he says he's struck by the fact "there's an awful lot of government" in Washington to trim.
