Conrad says Obama State of Union 'inspirational'

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad called President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech "inspirational" and said the president "struck the right themes."

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad called President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech "inspirational" and said the president "struck the right themes."

The North Dakota Democrat says he's pleased the president mentioned many of the deficit reduction proposals put forward by a federal budget commission on which Conrad served.

He liked Obama's talk about the need to reform government, invest in public works and improve the nation's educational system.

Obama promised to veto budget bills that include so-called earmark spending, and Conrad says he doesn't agree with that. He says earmarks let members of Congress put their own spending priorities in the federal budget.

Conrad stayed home from the State of the Union speech because he has a bad cold and cough. He watched it on television.
