Wahpeton-Breckenridge expecting yet another spring flood

Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) - The predictions are out, and like other cities, Wahpeton and Breckenridge appear to be on the brink of another spring flood. How much more prepared are the cities are this time around?

Right now Richland County is 10 inches above its annual snowfall in the middle of January. The county has flooded 5 of the past 6 springs, and county officials say in 2011 they aren't expecting anything less.

Brett Lambrecht: “Looking at the prediction numbers, it looks very workable, as in a manageable flood.”

Weather experts say there is an 88-percent chance of the river reaching over 14 feet, resulting in a major flood. Lambrecht's biggest fear is that there could be a very wet spring like 2009.

All the county can do right now is be prepared. And, like officials in other cities, all Lambrecht can do is wait, see and react.

Lambrecht: “If we go into where we have a big huge rainfall at that time then we'll have a fight on our hands.”

Currently there is a 40-percent chance the river will reach more than 17-feet.
