Overnight Blaze Hard to Battle at Sunflower Elevator

DURBIN, ND (WDAY TV)- Fire fighters spent Tuesday’s early morning hours on the scene of an elevator fire in Durbin, which is just south of Casselton. They were called to the scene just before 1:30 am. The elevator handles sunflowers seeds, which fire officials say can be very flammable thanks to the dust and oil in the seeds.

They were called to the scene just before 1:30 am.

The elevator handles sunflowers seeds, which fire officials say can be very flammable thanks to the dust and oil in the seeds.

The fire started in the cleaner and moved to a dust collector and a grain bin.

"Sunflower dust and seed are smoldering. We're cutting a wall out now to clean that one room out, then we're going to shovel it outside and pull it away with a loader. And then we're taking apart the dust collector and we'll be doing some work on the leg here in a little bit,” said Casselton Fire Chief Tim McLean while on scene.

McLean says the cold weather overnight made battling the fire a little bit slower. Fire fighters took shifts going in and out.

Crews from Davenport, Leonard and Mapleton also responded.

It's not clear yet what caused the fire. No one is hurt.
