BRAINERD, Minn. (AP) — Friends, coaches and former classmates are remembering a star Minnesota community college quarterback as someone who tragically didn't live to fulfill his potential.

A memorial service was held Wednesday at Central Lakes College in Brainerd for 20-year-old Dominique Corder. Corder was gunned down in front of his grandmother's house in Indianapolis on New Year's Day.

Speakers eulogized Corder for his exceptional promise and drive to achieve his goals.

Assistant football coach Jim Stohmeier says Corder, a sophomore who wore No. 1, was "No. 1 in the hearts of many."

Corder's framed jersey was near the speaker's podium. A football and a vase of flowers stood nearby.

Corder led Central Lakes to a 10-2 record this season. The Brainerd Dispatch reports the football team is retiring No. 1 in Corder's honor.
