100-car pileup on I-94 leaves drivers stranded for hours

West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Some described it as a scene out of the movies; a 100-car pileup today, just west of West Fargo. It started just before noon, and left drivers stranded for hours.

Everything was in place for this massive pile up. Ice blanketed roads from sleet left behind overnight. Visibility is so bad at times that the white line on the side of the road is your only marker to know where you are.

"We're going 5 miles an hour and we can only see in front of our vehicle."

Authorities say a truck jackknifed and took up both lanes of the interstate for eastbound traffic. Drivers heading toward Fargo had no idea traffic was at a complete stop. One vehicle after another after another, and so on, continued piling into one another, stretching the mess for more than a mile.

"I have trees to my left right now so you've got 100 feet right now, but I'm telling you honestly, honestly 10 feet at times."

Authorities say the fact that visibility was so bad actually helped the severity of accidents. Traffic was so slow; most of the accidents were minor. Many drivers had time to swerve into the ditch, dodging major injury at a bizarre scene.
