Canadian man sentenced for illegally entering US

MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A federal judge says a Canadian man who tried

to enter the United States after he was deported must serve nearly

four years in prison.

Theodore Halter was charged in North Dakota with re-entry of a

deported alien. Authorities say he climbed over a fence near the

International Peace Garden in August.

Halter told investigators he was on his way to Rochester, Minn.,

to settle a personal issue with the Social Security Administration.

He had been deported in March after he was convicted in Minnesota

of felony domestic assault.

U.S. District Judge Daniel Hovland sentenced Halter to 46 months

in prison, with credit for time served.
