Officials say homeless deaths have doubled in ND

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The executive director of the North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People says the number of homeless deaths have doubled in the last year.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The executive director of the North Dakota Coalition for Homeless People says the number of homeless deaths have doubled in the last year.

Michael Carbone (car-BONE') says an informal survey of homeless shelters throughout the state shows that the number of deaths ballooned from 11 in 2009 to 21 this year. Fourteen of those deaths were recorded in Fargo, the state's largest city.

Carbone says the totals are related to an increase in the number of homeless people in the state, particularly the number of homeless families. He says the homeless in North Dakota are susceptible to bad weather, violence and health problems.

Gov. Jack Dalrymple has proclaimed Tuesday as Homeless Memorial Day. It is the shortest day — and longest night — of the year.
