Moorhead Fire Chief Investigation: Hewitt will not be chargedMoorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - New major developments today in the case against Moorhead's Fire Chief. Today we learned Joel Hewitt will not be charged and also learned more about why he was under investigation in the first place.
Becker County Attorney Michael Fritz says Fire Chief Hewitt was investigated by Moorhead Police based on a number of allegations.
We knew he was put on probation accused of illegally sharing information about this fatal fire in Moorhead in February, but Fritz says he also was investigated on allegations he hired prostitutes.
As we told you this summer, Hewitt told the city manager he dated a madam, but broke up with her when he learned about her illegal activities. The city hadn't confirmed that was part of the investigation.
But again he won't be charged, Fritz says the claims from prostitutes lack sufficient corroboration and as for the sharing of information about the fatal fire. He says Hewitt's conduct didn't break the law.
The city of Moorhead placed Hewitt on paid administrative leave in August. They didn't return requests for comment tonight. So for now, No word yet on if he'll get his job back.
