Governor John Hoeven greeted the 47 soldiers with the 285th at the Freedom Salute Ceremony. The Bismarck based helicopter unit mobilized in October 2009.

Soldiers are still adjusting to life at home, but are happy to be back for the holidays after missing so many.

HEATHER MCCOY: "It's a completely different experience to be able to decorate. We're just thankful this year to be able to spend the holidays together and for everybody to be safe, everyone, the whole unit to be back safe for their families, it's really special."

A somber day as Congressman Earl Pomeroy attended his last guard event as representative for the state. Pomeroy has been at every guard event except one: during his honeymoon!

He says getting to know the guard family is one of the most profound impressions he will take away from this job.

"There are not adequate words for how a person feels about people like this. Coming to the Guard events over the years has meant an awful lot to me. I just feel privileged to know members of the National Guard and their families."

This also marks the last time guard members will have Hoeven as their state commander.
