Fargo family welcomes exchange student and her mother from China for Thanksgiving

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Millions of families across the country are celebrating Thanksgiving, but for more than 30-NDSU students from around the world, they are experiencing the holiday in the homes of welcoming Fargo families.

Today, the day of giving, but the Thomas family is taking. They are taking in Wanwei Guan and her mother from China.

Wanwei Guan: "I like to learn different things. I like to travel around. So, and I like to make friends."

Guan, has spent the last three Thanksgivings in America, a holiday that isn't celebrated in China. But for the first time this year, Guan's mother traveled half way around the world to spend it with her.

Wanwei Guan: "Let my mom see my life in America. And experience different cultures in an American family."

About 30 families from the metro are hosting foreign students representing 80- countries.

Its part of NDSU's Diversity and Global outreach program.

Originally from Alabama, Tabitha Thomas' Southern hospitality is not just feeding her family, but opening a whole new culinary experience for Wanwei and her mother.

Tabitha Thomas: "Just wanted to again show how we celebrate Thanksgiving and how we feast and socialize, and love on each other."

For families like the Thomas', they're making sure the ones who can’t make it home to be with their family. They're making a home for them right here in Fargo.
