FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Winter weather is hampering efforts by crews to stop an oil well leak in northwest North Dakota.
The Whiting Petroleum Corp. well was shut down over the weekend after a valve near the wellhead failed and caused oil, natural gas and water to spill into a lined pit. State health officials say all the liquid has been contained and there has been no environmental damage.
Company spokesman Jack Ekstrom says the flow of liquid has slowed dramatically but below-zero temperatures are making it difficult to stop the flow. He says the delay will not affect the containment or cleanup.
The well is in a remote area about eight miles northwest of New Town.
