Valley City students gather thousands of pounds of food for area pantriesValley City, ND (WDAY TV) - The inspiration to fill hungry stomachs this holiday season is spreading 60 miles west. Students throughout Barnes County have gathered thousands of pounds of food and packed it up for area food pantries.
Hundreds of eager hands, Valley City pre-teens, and high schoolers were in a fun-filled frenzy. A specific stock-piling mission: Pack up roughly 10-thousand cans and cardboard boxes.
ALISON: "After 10 years of "Stuff the Truck" program, we kind of thought let's take the idea of "Fill the Dome" and fly with it."
"We came up with the name "Pack the HAC" and we coined that term and it has a nice ring to it."
ALLISON: "And it's a great way to fill the Barnes County food pantry because they are running very low on their foods and stuff."
This first time boxing-up bonanza may be a smaller version from that about an hour east, but it has just as much dedication, energy, and love behind the donated boxes. Each one tallied and hauled out to a distribution truck; all in less than 30 minutes.
ALISON: "We have filled almost a basketball court and that is huge for the base that we've got! "We wanted to make this year all out and we hope to continue the momentum!"
All the donations from the three school districts will go straight to the Barnes County Food Pantry. At Valley City High School alone, about 28-hundred food items were brought in.
