Former Wilkin Co. Engineer: Spring flooding may be worse than ever

(WDAY TV) - A Former Wilkin County engineer, who has battled countless floods, says he's already seeing dangerous signs for another spring flood; maybe worse than ever.

The most alarming being the water in the Ottertail River system. He says there are a handful of lakes that are within inches of being the highest they've ever been.

Right now the Orwell dam is releasing 1800 cubic feet per second; usually at this time it's releasing 250 CFS.

"So it's seven times higher than it's supposed to be at this time. The all time record for right now is about 950 CFS and it's at 1800. So it's almost doubled so that is a real concern."

Richels says there is still plenty of a time for things to get better, but this is the worst he's seen it in the fall.
