"Let's face it I'm a 24-year-old pretty young guy that went out and did this. So I didn't have a lot to my name when I first started out," said Dane Ferguson, owner of Ferguson Books and Media in Grand Forks.
After graduating from Concordia college, he moved to Grand Forks to pursue a dream.
"My wife and I are very passionate about the written word. My wife is a school teacher and believes education is of the utmost importance," Ferguson said.
The shop is the only new and used bookstore in Grand Forks and although they have only been open for 5 months, the Fergusons are already expanding their business.
"We opened a kiosk in the Columbia Mall. With that we've been really fortunate to pick up some out of town visitors that really didn't know we existed," Ferguson said.
With a limited number of bookstores in the area, this little shop is thriving.
"The used book store is a good thing you know, because a lot of the new books, if you have to buy everything new, it's way too much money, it's hard to keep up," Ferguson Books and Media employee Craig Christianson said.
In a world where you can read a book digitally, it's nice to know you can still find the real thing.
"The literary world is kind of suffering sometimes in this time in our life and I think book stores, it just gives the opportunity and still provides something to the community," Ferguson said.
Fulfilling a goal and helping to give the community something it was missing.
The Fergusons received help starting their business from the North Dakota Small Business Development Center.
