CAMP GRAFTON, N.D. (AP) — Eight disabled military veterans have registered for a special deer hunt this week at the Camp Grafton Training Center near Devils Lake.

The North Dakota National Guard says each hunter will be accompanied by an assistant, typically a family member, as well as a Camp Grafton official.

The late Col. Dean Hildebrand initiated the hunt more than 20 years ago to give disabled veterans an opportunity to enjoy an activity they might not have been able to do on their own. Hildebrand also was a former director of North Dakota's Game and Fish Department.

The hunt also helps keep the Camp Grafton deer population in check.
