Feedback from focus groups to help NDSU move forwardFargo, ND (WDAY TV) - NDSU's President says they clearly needed to define the direction of the university when he stepped in as leader. Now, Dean Bresciani is taking input from about 40 listening groups whose hundreds of pages worth of feedback will be intricate parts of how the school goes forward.
About 400 students, faculty and staff make up these focus groups and many of them said, often times in the past, decision were made without and ounce of broad input as to where the university is going. Dr. Bresciani says today, that's all about to change.
The idea came from his experience in the business realm. 5 purposefully broad topics, like teaching, applied research and student engagements were discussed for hours amongst the groups.
Criticism emerged, like an unclear university brand and many frustrations that faculty and staff isn’t able to do the good work they strive for, because of policy or cost limitations. Bresciani says a lot of that comes from the lack of state financial support.
BRESCIANI: "Because our faculty-to-student ratios are off, there's not enough support for our functions and for what we're doing. Even the simplest things have been cut or eliminated. It's as if we're in a budget crisis, and NDSU is, but it's ironic we're in a larger state environment that's at the other end of that spectrum."
Bresciani says they hope to have results of the panels put together by spring and have a strategic plan in place with the many suggestions by his State of the University address next fall.
