Pelican Rapids football team heads to state for the first time in 10 years

Pelican Rapids, Minn. (WDAY TV) - It's been a long strange trip for the Pelican Rapids football team to the state tournament.

Dave Haugen's gang entered sections as the number six seed, but here they are, back at the state tourney for the first time since 1997 when they won the whole thing. The Vikings lost three straight times in the section final, but now have finally got over the hump.

“It feels awfully good because we had some teams that we thought might do it, and been kind of knocking on the door to get back. To finally experience that feeling of being a state tournament team again is just really satisfying.”

“Every one of us hears about the Cinderella stories and I feel like we did it. It's the greatest feeling in the world. It took a lot of effort. All the guys throughout the pre-season, throughout the beginning of the season, it took a lot. But it all paid off.”

Pelican Rapids faces Ottertail Central at 8 at the Fargodome Friday.
