Current Sheriff Gene Bjerke picked up 8 more votes, while former sheriff Randy McClaflin picked up 11 more votes. The two are now separated by a total of 28 votes.

The Barnes County auditor said Bjerke can request a recount, but it will cost him 500-dollars. WDAY caught up with the sheriff minutes after he heard the canvassing results.

“Right now I'm not real sure what I'm going to do. I have to talk to some people and see what the next step is. The next day or two, we'll finally decide what to do from here on.”

Legally, Bjerke has until Thursday at 5pm to request a recount.
