(WDAY TV) - We are just heading into the winter of 2010/2011, but a volcanic eruption could mean a colder winter next year.

Mount Merapi in Indonesia has been steadily emitting volcanic ash into the air for the last two weeks. More than 140 people have been killed and airline flights have been disrupted. If the eruption continues and intensifies, its impact could be felt here and around the world.

“There was a lot of the cold weather in this area in the 1880's. A lot of our records were because of a couple of volcanic eruptions from Indonesia, Krackatoa for instance. Perhaps global temperatures could drop a degree or two, but for a globe that's a huge impact.”

Daryl says there has not been enough ash shot into the atmosphere yet to have an impact on our weather, but if it continues or other volcanoes erupt, it could.
