DNR expects more deer will be taken

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Department of Natural Resources predicts this season's deer hunt will be more successful for hunters heading into the woods and fields beginning Saturday.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Department of Natural Resources predicts this season's deer hunt will be more successful for hunters heading into the woods and fields beginning Saturday.

About 500,000 hunters are expected to take part in the state's firearms gun season this year.

The deer will have fewer places to hide. Last year, about 10 percent of Minnesota's corn had been harvested. This year, 90 percent of the corn is gone.

DNR big game program coordinator Lou Cornicelli says he also uses the archery season as a gauge and this year's harvest was up substantially.

Seasonable weather is on tap for the weekend. Cornicelli tells the St. Cloud Times half of the annual harvest during the firearms season takes place during the first three days.
