ND motorcycle deaths at all-time high

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Motorcycle fatalities in North Dakota this year have reached an all-time high.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Motorcycle fatalities in North Dakota this year have reached an all-time high.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that 15 people have died while riding motorcycles on roads in the state. That more than doubles last year's total of seven deaths and eclipses the previous one-year high of 13 in 2008.

Michael Jay with the state chapter of the motorcycle organization ABATE says the number is troubling because many of the fatalities occurred in single motorcycle crashes. The chapter director says those types of crashes typically are caused by such things as speeding or alcohol use.

Highway Patrol Lt. Jody Skogen says that nearly two-thirds of the motorcyclists killed this year were not wearing helmets.
