HETTINGER, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota high school student's plans to buy an African lion and house it on the family farm near Hettinger is under scrutiny.

Adams County Commissioner Chuck Christman says he's fielded phone calls from people worried about public safety and also the lion's welfare.

Eighteen-year-old Ben Davison says he's working to improve an enclosure for the animal after the state veterinarian's office said it didn't meet standards. He tells The Bismarck Tribune that he loves animals and wants to learn about them.

Deputy State Veterinarian Beth Carlson says Davison can't get the lion unless the seller meets federal licensing requirements, and that's in question.

In the meantime, Davison is awaiting the arrival of a 6-inch alligator.
